Reel & Spool Glossary |
ABS Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Arbor Hole (D) The center or shaft hole in the flange of the spool or reel. Barrel (C) The cylindrical tube, often referred to as hub or core, between the flanges that product is wound on. Drive Hole The hole adjacent to the center hole and within the hub area that will accept a pin that will turn or drive the reel during winding. Finish (Tie Off) Hole The hole on the outer edge of the flange portion of the spool or reel where the product can be secured on a full reel. Flange (A) The disc or circle on the end of the core that holds the wound material in place as well as offering protection to the wound product. HIPS High Impact Polystyrene Izod Impact Izod measures how hard you can hit a plastic part before it breaks according to ASTM testing methods. MEK Methyl Ethyl Ketone- a solvent typically used to bond plastic spool & reel parts together. Reel Typically larger sizes greater than 12 inches in flange diameter and used for a variety of products. Spool Typically smaller sizes with flange diameters under 10 inches and used for textile, solder, wire or filament line. Stacking Lugs Locking tabs or lugs on the outer face of the flange to allow stacking flange to flange on pallets without movement. Start Hole Typically a round hole in the flange portion of the reel adjacent to the core to feed product through for the winding start up. Tensile Tensile measure- how much pressure is required to stretch plastic until it breaks. Traverse Length (B) The length of the core between the flanges where product can be wound. Vicat Vicat is the point at which the plastic softens or starts to melt. Winding Patterns Level Layer Wind - Traverse Wind - Random Wind
